ABOUT ME
You guys… we made it.
My teenager just finished his first year of high school, and I don’t know about you, but that final stretch of May felt like a time warp. Between finals, surfing until dark, and a backpack clean-out that looked like something out of a post-apocalyptic film, I’m ready for a slower pace… and maybe a beach nap.
If you’re also standing at the edge of summer wondering how to manage the transition from school-year structure to free-range chaos (with work, travel, and constant snack demands layered on top), this one’s for you.
As a professional organizer — and a parent who’s been through many a season shift — I’ve got a plan to help you wrap up the school year, set a flexible summer rhythm, and pack a just-in-case kit that’ll make you feel like Superwoman (or at least less likely to panic at a surprise splash pad moment).
Let’s get you set up for a wild, wonderful summer — without losing your mind… or your sunglasses.
The last weeks of school can feel like sprinting a marathon — disjointed, exhausting, and somehow involving 27 different forms of paperwork.
Here’s a Quick Close-Out Checklist to help you actually finish the year:
✔ Go Through the Backpack
Yes, even the side pockets. Toss the trash. Recycle the loose papers. Reclaim your Tupperware.
✔ Sort & Save the Schoolwork
Keep a few standout projects (you’ll know the ones). Snap photos of the rest and let go of the guilt. Bye, 473 math worksheets.
✔ Check the Lost & Found
Odds are high they brought home a sweatshirt that isn’t theirs.
✔ Inventory School Supplies
Toss anything broken, store what still works, and donate the rest. You’ll thank yourself in August.
✔ Return Anything That Belongs to the School
Library books, loaner Chromebooks, band instruments — do a quick sweep so you’re not dealing with fines or last-minute scrambles.
✔ Thank the Teachers
Truly. Whether it’s a card, a Venmo gift card, or a heartfelt email, it makes a difference. They’ve earned gold medals (and naps).

Here’s the truth: summer isn’t a routine — it’s a rhythm. And when you embrace that, things get a whole lot easier.
Here’s how to create a loose structure that holds space for fun and sanity:
🗓 Make a Big-Picture Calendar
Even if you’re not a calendar person, summer demands it. Add in everything that affects the day-to-day: camps, travel, babysitting days, visits from grandparents, you name it. Hang it where everyone can see it (and refer back to it 42 times a day).
⏰ Build a Daily Rhythm, Not a Rigid Schedule
Instead of micromanaging every minute, try a gentle structure:
🎒 Prep Your Camp + Travel Kits in Advance
Create grab-and-go bags for each category of summer chaos:
Pro Tip: Tape a checklist inside each bag so no one (ahem, you) forgets the essentials in the mad morning dash.
This is the Truly Organized® summer essential: your built-in Plan B (and C and D).
Keep it packed and ready to go in the trunk of your car, by the back door, or wherever your family launches from. It’s your just-in-case survival kit.
Here’s what to include:
For little ones: swim diapers, bubbles (in a Ziploc, trust me), a few beach toys
For teens: paperback book, charger, headphones
For you: SPF lip balm, a hidden chocolate square, a magazine you may or may not get to read
Not perfection.
Not a Pinterest-worthy packing list.
Just a little more ease, breathing room, and readiness to say yes to spontaneous summer moments.
By closing out the school year with intention, creating a rhythm that works for your family, and having a grab-and-go kit ready for whatever unfolds — you’re giving yourself the gift of a smoother, more memory-filled summer.
You don’t have to do it all.
You don’t have to do it perfectly.
You just have to be ready enough.
And if you’re not? At least you’ve got snacks. 🍫
Here’s to a summer of spontaneity, sanity, and sunscreen.
Happy Organizing!
