ABOUT ME
Spring has technically arrived here in Santa Barbara — the days are stretching a little longer, the gardens are starting to wake up, and normally this is when we’d all be flinging open the windows and letting that sweet Spring air pour in.
But in true coastal California fashion, we’re getting the slow version of Spring — drizzly mornings, gray afternoons, and that feeling like the sun is just waiting for its cue.
Still — this is the perfect time to clear some space and lighten things up. The marine layer will burn off. The ocean breeze will roll in. And when it does, your home will be ready to catch it.
This guide will walk you through simple ways to refresh your home — no sunshine required — plus give you my favorite quick-hit list of 50 easy things to declutter right now.
Spring is a season of transition (whether the weather’s cooperating or not). It’s a natural time to shake off what’s feeling heavy or stagnant and make space for what’s next.
And just like the natural world around us, our personal environments crave that same shift.
Decluttering in Spring isn’t just about having a neater space — it’s about creating room for what’s next. In Feng Shui philosophy, the energy in your home is a reflection of your life. When things pile up, energy gets stuck. When you clear space, energy has room to move and flow… and it invites in new possibilities.
Even if the sun hasn’t quite broken through yet, clearing out what feels heavy or stagnant now is a way of preparing — of aligning your home and your mindset with the season ahead.
One of my favorite ways to instantly shift the mood of a home is to add a few simple touches of nature — even when the outdoors feels more moody than magical.
Fresh flowers on the counter. A bowl of bright citrus by the sink. Turning on music (try cueing this up to instantly feel ready to refresh: The Edge of the Ocean by Stick Figure)
These little things create an energy shift — they tell your home (and your brain) that something new is happening.
But before I do any of that, I always start by clearing the floor.
It’s my first step to any organizing project, big or small. Even if there’s still chaos elsewhere, there’s something about a clear floor that instantly makes a space feel calmer. More open. Like there’s room to walk, to move, to breathe.
Last month, I shared suggestions on How to Beat Decision Fatigue and Finally Let Go, especially if you’re feeling extremely overwhelmed.
Here are a few more tips to keep up the momentum:
Give yourself just 15–30 minutes at a time. Focus on one area (a drawer, a shelf, a countertop) and see how much you can clear out.
For every item you pick up, ask yourself:
If the answer is no, it’s time to let it go!
Not sure where to begin? Start with high-traffic areas like the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living room. These are the spaces where you’ll feel the biggest difference right away!
