But before the cozy evenings and effortless routines, there’s the reality of moving day and the chaos that often comes with it. Between mountains of boxes and the dreaded “Where’s my toothbrush?” moment, unpacking can quickly become overwhelming.
As a professional organizer, I know how a little strategy can transform stressful to seamless. Here’s how to approach your first week in a new home with organization and ease.
Before moving, set yourself up for success by packing a suitcase (or two if you’re kinda high-maintenance). Think of it as your survival kit for the first 24-48 hours—everything you need to function before diving into full unpack mode.
Include toiletries, medications, a couple changes of clothes, important documents, chargers, snacks, a coffee maker, and basic kitchen supplies like paper towels, dish soap, and utensils.
Just pack like you’re going on an weekend trip to your own town. This will keep you from tearing through boxes at midnight searching for a phone charger.
Rather than opening boxes at random, start with the most important and work your way through your home room by room.
Here’s a game plan to keep you focused and feeling accomplished:
Pro Tip: just throw all the empty boxes outside and bribe a teenager to break them all down and stack them up neatly for you. Not only will you clear up precious space, but something about seeing all those flattened boxes lined up feels like a victory.
